The company that dominates the eftpos market says sales for December are up more than 6% on last year, with shoppers spending $2.8 billion up to Tuesday.
Paymark processes more than 75% of all electronic transactions in New Zealand. Its figures for the first 21 days of December show the value of sales has risen by 6.2% and the volume of transactions by 7.5% over the same period in 2008.
Paymark says the Auckland/Northland areas recorded sales of $1.1 billion, while shoppers in Wellington spent about $290 million and Cantabrians about $330 million.
The chief executive of Paymark, Simon Tong, says the figures are encouraging for retailers, who have had a hard winter.
