Pub owner may ban under 20s

The owner of a new pub in Paraparaumu, north of Wellington, says he may ban patrons under the age of 20.

Jamie Williams says last Friday and Saturday, about 200 people, identified by his bouncers as being under 20 years old, caused about $2000 damage to the Monteiths Brewery Bar during its first weekend.

Mr Williams says the young people vandalised his bathrooms and drove away other customers with aggressive behaviour and fighting.

The Human Rights Commission says banning any patron on the grounds of age could potentially breach the Human Rights Act.

But Mr Williams says, for now, he will carefully consider which patrons to let into the bar, and then ban under-20 year olds if they continue to affect his business.
