Cellphone driving ban will be enforced - police

4:41 pm on 24 December 2009

Police say they will now actively enforce a ban on using hand-held cellphones while driving.

Officers will now actively enforce the ban, which came into law on 1 November, rather than warning drivers who are caught flouting it.

Drivers caught breaching the law can expect a fine of $80 and 20 demerit points.

The Automobile Association supports the stance, saying a seven week introductory period is more than long enough.
