Large rest home to be closed

A large rest home and hospital in south Auckland is to be closed because the standard of care it provides is not considered satisfactory.

The Counties Manukau District Health Board and the Guardian Trust mortagee running the PacifiCare Rest Home Hospital, also known as Blue Dove, say they will close the premises next month.

The DHB says there are concerns about the management of medicines, the use of restraints, the standard of food, and a lack of systems and processes generally.

The DHB says it expects to find alternative accommodation in the area for the 65 residents.

Radio New Zealand's health correspondent says the premises, formerly known as Culverden, have faced closure in the past over sub-standard care.

The Aged Care Association says the closure has been carefully managed, which it believes is in stark contrast to that of the Rose A Lea resthome in Palmerston North.
