Accused's name suppressed for grandmother's sake

Interim name suppression has been continued for a man charged with seriously assaulting an elderly woman in Christchurch to allow his grandmother to be informed of the charges he faces.

Patricia Burrows, 85, was mugged in the Barrington Mall carpark on the evening of 3 December as she returned from buying milk.

The robber took her handbag containing about $110 cash and threw her to the ground, leaving her with a fractured pelvis.

A man, 35, made a second appearance in the Christchurch District Court on Thursday, charged with aggravated robbery causing grevious bodily harm.

Judge Raoul Neave granted interim name suppression until 7 January so his grandmother, 90, can be informed of the charges.

He was remanded in custody and will reappear in court on 26 February.

A lawyer told the court his client denies the charge as well as three other unrelated matters.

The victim was expected to be discharged from hospital in time for Christmas.
