The new owner of the Flying Nun recording label says he wants to promote New Zealand music overseas.

Founder Roger Shepherd has re-acquired the label from Warner Music. He sold the company in 1999.

Flying Nun was started in the early 1980s. It is best known for its stable of Dunedin rock bands including The Clean and Strait Jacket Fits.

Mr Shepherd says he's excited about exposing international audiences to Flying Nun's back catalogue, as well as new New Zealand artists.

He says Flying Nun was being neglected by Warner Music and he's excited to be back in charge of the label.
