Blog messages intended as protest at suppression laws

A man who posted images on an internet blog that the police say breach court suppression orders, says he published the pictures as a protest.

Cameron Slater, who writes the blog Whale Oil, will appear in the Auckland District Court on 5 January.

Police say he broke name supression orders relating to an Olympic team member and a well known entertainer, who are facing charges for separate sexual offences.

Mr Slater says New Zealand's suppression laws were written before the advent of the internet and need to be reviewed.

A lawyer specialising in information law says it's the first time a blogger will be taken to court. John Edwards says bloggers have just been warned in the past.
