No let up in fishing restriction checks over summer

Fisheries officers say they'll be keeping a close eye on recreational fish catch size and bag limits during the Christmas break.

The Ministry of Fisheries says holidaymakers can expect to see plenty of officers around, clamping down on people taking undersize fish and exceeding bag limits over the summer.

Most key species, such as blue cod and snapper, have restrictions on the numbers that can be caught.

Taking undersize species or more than the allowed amount of fish can result in fines of between $250 and $500.

The ministry says many fishers follow the law, but there are still those who officers have to continually educate.
