Airline industry welcomes relaxing of extra security

The Board of Airline Representatives says easing the ban on United States-bound passengers moving around in the final stages of flight is the correct decision.

The ban, implemented following an attempted terrorist attack on a Detroit-bound flight on Christmas Day, was relaxed by US transportation security officials on Wednesday.

The Board of Airline Representatives represents all international carriers.

Executive director John Beckett says pilots will use their common sense and training, as well as advice from security authorities, to decide when passengers should be seated near the end of flights to the US.

The move has also been welcomed by aviation unions and industry groups, who say it's common sense.

Qantas spokesperson Olivia Wirth says the airline has confidence in its pilots being able to decide when passengers should be in their seats.

She says Qantas hasn't received any complaints from its New Zealand or Australian customers about other extra security measures that remain in place for US bound flights.

Air New Zealand has declined to comment.
