A Whangarei man charged over a fatal hit-and-run crash will remain in custody until his next court appearance.

John Williams, 63, has been charged with failing to ascertain injury and dangerous driving causing death after cyclist Frederick Ogle, 48, was struck by a car on Saturday morning on State Highway 14 in Maungatapere.

Mr Ogle, a well-known Whangarei road safety campaigner, was cycling home after a training ride with friends when he was hit from behind.

He died at the side of the road despite efforts of passers-by to save him.

Mr Williams appeared in Whangarei District Court on Tuesday afternoon and was remanded without plea.

Police have seized the vehicle they believe was involved in the crash for forensic examination.
