Lower speed limit wanted around rural schools

6:13 am on 2 February 2010

A Canterbury woman wants a lower speed limit around rural schools.

She's backed by a rural womens group, but both say the Transport Minister is not listening.

Lucinda Rees is calling for a speed limit of 40km per hour between 8am - 4pm outside country schools.

She says safety fears mean many rural parents are wrapping their children in cotton wool.

The campaign is supported by Rural Women New Zealand.

But both say their pleas are falling on deaf ears and Rural Women says Transport Minister Steven Joyce has not replied to their letters.

Mr Joyce could not be contacted.
