Severe winds set to hit South Island

8:43 pm on 1 July 2013

MetService says severe weather warnings are in place for Southland, Otago and Canterbury with winds up to 120km/h expected overnight on Monday.

It says winds may damage trees and powerlines and move any unsecured objects.

Emergency Management Southland is reminding people to bring inside or tie down outdoor furniture and trampolines.

MetService forecaster Rochelle Fleming says the weather should ease by Tuesday morning, but predicts the heavy winds will return at night and continue into Wednesday.
