Man admits murdering retired journalist

A man has pleaded guilty to the murder of retired journalist Derek Round just before he was due to stand trial.

Michael Werahiko admitted the charge in the High Court at Wellington on Wednesday.

Mr Round, 77, was found dead in his Whanganui home in May 2012 after what police said was a horrific attack.

A formal conviction has been delayed because it would change Werahiko's classification in prison. The 31-year-old has been remanded in custody for sentencing on 26 August.

Werahiko's lawyer said a signed statement of a provocation allegation by his client would be provided then.

Justice Mackenzie withheld the summary of facts from the media, as it may need to be amended because of the allegation.
