School rugby teams suspended after brawl

11:57 am on 4 July 2013

Two first XVs from Wellington secondary schools are suspended from playing rugby until Monday following two brawls at a game last weekend.

Newlands and Bishop Viard Colleges received the ban at a judicial hearing of the Wellington Secondary School's Rugby Union.

A number of players from each team will attend further hearings next week, on separate charges.

The rugby union has expressed total condemnation of what occurred during the match at Newlands College.

And College Sport Wellington, the organisation running the tournament, says a higher level of self-discipline from players is expected.

The game was called off with neither side being declared the winner.
