Man falls to death off Raglan wharf

11:00 am on 8 July 2013

A 42-year-old man has died after being swept away in a strong current while fishing off the wharf at Raglan in western Waikato.

Senior Sergeant Rupert Friend of the western Waikato police says emergency services were called at about midnight on Sunday night after receiving reports of an unconscious person being pulled from the water.

Senior Sergeant Friend says the man was casting off at the end of the pier when he fell into the sea and was swept away. A friend who jumped into the water to try and save him got him onto some rocks and raised the alarm, but the man was already unresponsive.

The death has been reported to the coroner.
