Police investigating off-duty officer over football incident

Christchurch police have confirmed the man involved in an off-field assault at a football match in the weekend was a police officer.

A complaint was laid by an assistant referee who was officiating at a game between two premier-league teams, Western and Cashmere Technical at ASB Football Park (English Park) on Saturday.

Police say the incident took place after the game, as the match officials were leaving the field.

District commander Gary Knowles says the incident was not related to the officer's role as a police employee and an internal investigation is under way.
