NZ bananas about bananas

More is spent on bananas than any other fruit in New Zealand.

Official figures from Statistics NZ show households spend an average $88 per year on bananas, $61 on apples and $26 on oranges.

That means people eat roughly two bananas a week - an average of 18kg every year.

The fruit has doubled in price in the last 30 years - whereas the cost of food overall has tripled.

The Nutrition Foundation says there are many reasons to find the banana appealing.

Dietician Sarah Hanrahan said they are incredibly portable and packed with nutrition - being a good source of vitamin C and fibre.
