Forensic examination continues at Kamo house

Police are not releasing the findings of a post-mortem examination of a baby who died after receiving head injuries.

Atreyu Taylor-Matene, aged one year, was taken to Whangarei hospital by his mother on Friday morning with head injuries. He was flown to Starship hospital in Auckland where he died that night.

A homicide investigation is underway. The police believe the baby's injuries were caused by significant force, and are still investigating what happened before he died.

Police say preliminary results of a post-mortem have given them more clarity about what happened to the child, but they are not not disclosing the findings.

Forensic examinations are continuing at a home in the Whangarei suburb of Kamo, and the child's family and their neighbours are being interviewed. About 25 officers are working on the case.
