Police have named the driver who died in a crash in Canterbury on Monday afternoon. He was Rognvald (Ronald) Stuart Smith from Rangiora.
A police spokesperson says the 77-year-old was alone in his car when hit by another car and then a truck at the intersection of Giles and Tram roads near Kaiapoi.
Police say initial inquiries indicate that Mr Smith drove through the controlled intersection. Road conditions at the time were wet and slippery.
