Officer charged over assault at match

A police officer has been charged with assault after an altercation with a referee at a football match in Christchurch.

Police say the 59-year-old officer who was off-duty assaulted an assistant referee following the Premier League match at ASB park in June.

Canterbury District Commander Superintendent Gary Knowles said on Friday that police have interviewed more than 20 witnesses.

The officer is currently on restricted duties and an internal investigation will be carried out, Mr Knowles said.

The man would appear at the Christchurch District Court in September.
