Court media coverage reviewed

12:00 pm on 10 August 2013

The Chief Justice is to review court media coverage to find out whether the guidelines are working and there are sufficient safeguards.

Dame Sian Elias and a panel will consider television coverage, photography and sound recording in court.

The review of the 18-year-old guidelines will include whether appropriate safeguards are in place for victims, witnesses, the public and other parties.

The convenor of the Law Society's Criminal Law Committee says the review is an excellent idea.

Jonathan Krebs says the Law Society has been concerned for some time about the sensationalising of some trials. He says the in-court coverage was introduced to inform the public and demystify court processes but it has become, at times, a soap opera.
