IRD warning on new email phishing scam

12:02 pm on 28 August 2013

The Inland Revenue Department is warning people to ignore a new email phishing scam asking them to divulge their bank details and personal information.

The email uses IRD's official branding and states the customer has received a tax refund, but must first send their personal information to access it.

The deparment's acting general manager of customer services says Inland Revenue would never send an email with this request; instead it would ring or send a letter to a customer.

Patrick Crawford says it is a deliberate attempt to steal people's money and anyone who receives the email should delete it immediately.
