Future of 'School Journal' unknown

The closure of the company behind the School Journal has raised fears about the future of the publication.

More than 100 jobs are going with the collapse of Learning Media, a State company.

Writer Gregory O'Brien, who has written a book about the history of the School Journal, said the 106-year-old publication is a powerhouse of history and has contributed to New Zealand's identity.

Mr O'Brien said writers and artists such as Janet Frame, Colin McCahon, James K. Baxter and Margaret Mahy have worked for the journal.

He said the Government should be putting more money into Learning Media, rather than looking for another contractor.

The Ministry of Education said schools will continue to receive the journal and other educational resources from Learning Media.

PSA national secretary Brenda Pilott said the Government could have saved Learning Media by moving it back into the Ministry of Education.

However, Finance Minister Bill English said on Morning Report he can give a categorical assurance the School Journal will continue and schools will get the same support.
