The Auckland Philharmonia gets $2.1 million funding from the Government compared with $13.45 million for the NZSO.

After an orchestral sector review earlier this year, the Philharmonia was awarded a new "metropolitan" status but no extra funding.

Chief executive Barbara Glaser said Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Christopher Finlayson indicated that could change.

However, the minister said the Auckland orchestra will have to prove its worth.

More on what the future holds for the country's five main orchestras can be heard on Insight on Sunday.
