Labour says acting judge warrants need to be reissued

The Labour Party says the Government must re-issue acting warrants for senior judges in the district court, or face even more delays in court hearings and decisions.

Chief District Court Judge, Jan-Marie Dooge, has said a resource challenge looms next year, when there will not be enough judges to hear cases.

Labour justice spokesperson Andrew Little says the Government has misjudged what is needed for an effective court system, as judges are having to do more court time because of increasing demands.

He says 20 senior judges, who are on acting warrants, will be cut early next year.

Mr Little says these acting judges provide back up for when other judges are on annual or sick leave, and can be deployed to any court in New Zealand.

He says if none of them are replaced, there are going to be big problems for the court system and the people that go through it.
