The Independent Police Conduct Authority has cleared the police of blame over a shooting incident that left a man wounded near Wellington in May.

The incident happened during a domestic confrontation in Waitangirua.

It ended with Ruka Hemopo being shot in the back with a Glock pistol and being tasered at the same time.

Authority chair Sir David Carruthers says the police were justified in their actions.

He says two officers responded separately to the incident and arrived armed with a taser and gun.

He says they feared for the safety of Mr Hemopo's partner and used their weapons simultaneously.

One shot struck him in the back at the same time as the taser was used against him.

Mr Hemopo faces criminal charges and is in custody.

Sir David says the officers faced a complex, high-pressured and quickly-evolving situation, but followed policy in all respects.
