Public transport users in Auckland will have to wait an extra three months for the city's new electronic ticket system to be fully in place.

Auckland Transport had hoped the $100 million AT HOP system would be completed by Christmas, but is now aiming for March.

Auckland's trains and ferries accept the new card, and the rollout onto buses is about to resume after a one month pause, while technical problems were sorted.

Auckland Transport says there will also be a break during the summer holidays because buses needing to be converted will be busy at weekends on special events.

The agency's operations manager, Greg Edmonds, says it is better to educate commuters about the new system when patronage returns to normal after the holidays.

The rollout across the seven bus operators is to finish by March, and a new fare system will follow several months later.
