New Zealand neurological researchers have joined an international project aimed at developing better treatments for traumatic brain injuries.
Recent research indicates that the number of people who have suffered a traumatic brain injury is six times higher than previously thought.
AUT University professor Valery Feigin says the injuries are mostly caused by falls and car accidents.
He says they are behind a wide-ranging number of medical issues such as dementia, depression and even strokes.
Professor Feigin says traumatic brain injuries are often disabling and result in high costs for those who survive serious trauma.
