Corrections makes payments over RSA triple killings

The families of the three people who died in the Auckland RSA triple killings 12 years ago have received payments from the Corrections Department.

Bill Absalom, Mary Hobson and Wayne Johnson were murdered in 2001 by William Bell while he was on parole.

Mary Hobson's husband, Tai Hobson, received $60,000 in August and representatives from the Absalom and Johnson families have now each received the same sum from the Corrections Department.

After losing his compensation claim at the Court of Appeal in 2007, Mr Hobson wrote a letter to Cabinet Ministers pleading for a voluntary payment and an apology.

The families' lawyer, David Garrett, says it has been a long ordeal fighting for compensation and the payment is miserly, but it's better than nothing.

Mr Garrett says said no amount of money can ever bring back a loved one but the payment will, he hopes, bring some kind of closure to the families.

The sole survivor, Susan Couch, was granted compensation last year.
