Vocational courses 'giving students false job hopes'

9:45 am on 25 October 2013

The union representing tertiary educators says more needs to be done to make sure graduates get work.

The Tertiary Education Union says some vocational courses in areas like film, fashion design and photography give students unrealistic expectations about the job opportunities they will have once they graduate.

A spokesperson for the union, Sandra Grey, says some courses need to be more transparent. She says private institutions in particular will sometimes say "If you train with us, you'll get a job" - and that gives people false hope.

Tertiary Education Minister Steven Joyce says he doesn't think there is a major problem with vocational courses but the Government does have plans to provide more information about how successful different courses are at getting students jobs in their chosen industry.
