Defence Minister Jonathan Coleman says the soldier wounded in Afghanistan is making a good recovery and will return to New Zealand later this week.
The sergeant was wounded in the foot on Saturday, when an Afghan soldier shot at an Australian soldier.
Doctor Coleman says he is still to hear the exact circumstances of the incident, and an investigation is continuing.
"My understanding is that the troops had been to a meeting around the return of the laptop and then a third party, not involved in the meeting, launched this attack."
He says New Zealand will not withdraw its remaining personnel from Afghanistan on the basis of the shooting, and he says the reality is, it's a dangerous environment.
