A Northland polytech tutor is now facing 24 charges of sexual offending against young girls, including two of sexual violation.

James Sanders has been remanded in custody after appearing in the Kaitaia District Court on Wednesday afternoon.

Mr Sanders is charged with indecently assaulting seven girls - all but one of them under 12 years old at the time of the alleged offences, dating back to 2007.

The 65-year-old was employed on contract as a rural development tutor by Northtec, but was suspended after the charges were laid.

It is alleged that Mr Sanders' offending took place in connection with a programme supervised by his wife and attached to a primary school in Northland.

Judge John McDonald has suppressed the name of the school and the programme.

The judge told Mr Sanders the charges against him are serious and advised him to seek legal advice before his next court appearance in November.
