4:44 pm on 9 November 2013

Police are going door to door in a suburb of Hastings this weekend seeking information as they look for the man who sexually assaulted an 87-year-old woman.

The woman was attacked at her home at about midday on Thursday.

More than 20 officers are working this weekend and many will be on foot in the Frimley area speaking to residents.

They will be trying to gather information on the offender, who's described as dark-skinned and was wearing a green hooded top at the time. He was last seen walking in the Ikanui Road area on Thursday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Dave de Lange says they've already received some useful information.

"We've had a few people who've reported seeing a person who fits the description of our person of interest on the Ikanui Road area around the time of the incident."

Police say the woman is now recovering with support from her family.

Detective Senior Sergeant Dave de Lange said an examination of the house is expected to finish on Saturday.

Various items have been taken away for forensic examination, but he did not specify what the items are.
