Man charged in relation to sexual assault of elderly woman

5:58 pm on 10 November 2013

A 77-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in her home in Papatoetoe on Sunday morning.

Counties Manukau police say she was woken at about 6.30am by an unknown man who was touching her.

She activated a medical alarm and the man fled the scene.

A suspect was located by police in the area a short time later.

Police said neighbours spotted a man leaving the house. They followed him and saw him go to another house nearby.

When police arrived they were able to direct officers to the address.

Police say the woman is very distressed.

Detective Inspector Jim Gallagher said the actions of the neighbours were in the highest traditions in what would be expected from a community response and are an example to others.

A 39-year-old man has been charged with burglary and assault with intent to commit sexual violation and will appear in the Manukau District Court on Monday.

The incident is the latest in a series this week.

A Pukekohe couple in their 60's and 70's were the targets of a home invasion on Friday. They were assaulted and tied up by two men in their home.

And an 87-year-old Hastings woman was assaulted in her house at about midday on Thursday.

Elderly residents in Whangarei have been the target of night burglaries also.

Comment

Age Concern says the recent spate of attacks is dreadful and concerning.

Spokesperson Louise Collins hopes it is not a trend and that people are not taking part in copycat crimes.

She said older people need to remain vigilant and lock all doors and windows.
