Former Iraqi soldier loses murder sentence appeal

A former Iraqi soldier who admitted stabbing his wife to death has lost his final bid to legally challenge the sentence imposed on him.

In September 2011, Najeeb Dawood tied his wife to a chair using masking tape and stabbed her 55 times and also wounded his eldest daughter when she tried to stop the attack.

He was jailed for life in February this year and ordered to spend at least 17 years in jail before becoming eligible for parole.

In August the Court of Appeal threw out Dawood's appeal against the sentence.

The Supreme Court issued a decision on Wednesday refusing to hear a further appeal. The court says the case raises no issue of principle and nothing put forward on Dawood's behalf indicates any risk of a substantial miscarriage of justice.
