Police have been cleared of any wrongdoing in the death of a teenager after a short pursuit north of Katikati a year ago.

James Miles, who was 18 and did not have a current driver's licence, was driving a stolen car when he collided with an oncoming vehicle on State Highway Two on 12 November last year.

Police had received a report about a driver who had dangerously overtaken a truck and trailer unit and saw the stolen car shortly afterwards.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority said the short police pursuit which followed covered 1.3 kilometres and lasted 42 seconds.

Analysis showed Mr Miles blood alcohol level was 68mg/100ml of blood. The blood alcohol limit for drivers under the age of 20 years is zero.

The authority says it is discussing with police the policies on pursuing fleeing drivers.
