River rescue follows violent incident

Police are investigating an incident in which a woman allegedly ran over her partner several times, then drove the vehicle into the Waikato River and had to be rescued.

They say the incident occurred in the Hamilton suburb of Melville shortly before midday on Sunday.

Acting Detective Inspector Ross McKay says witnesses have reported seeing the 44-year-old woman as repeatedly running over her partner before driving away and leaving him with serious injuries.

One of the witnesses followed the woman several kilometres to the Waikato River and when the police arrived, Mr McKay says the woman drove her car over a 10 metre bank into the river.

Four police officers jumped into the water to rescue her and were helped by a kayaker and two boats.

The woman was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Mr McKay says police are considering the right way to acknowledge the actions of the people who helped in the rescue.
