Flu rates lowest for 20 years

New figures indicate this winter was one of the mildest flu seasons in 20 years, but people are advised not to become complacent.

The Southern Hemisphere influenza vaccine effectiveness research and surveillance project found 3326 people in the Auckland region tested positive for influenza at their GP and 202 people were hospitalised with influenza.

Dr Sue Huang said mild weather, high vaccination rates, and the prevalance of the milder influenza B will have all contributed to the low numbers.

Dr Huang said the fact there was a mild flu season this year, does not mean next year will also be mild.
