Two takahe chicks have hatched on Motutapu Island in what conservationists are hailing as a milestone for the endangered native bird.

They are the first chicks to hatch on the pest-free island near Auckland since adult takahe were released there last year.

Deidre Vercoe Scott says it is 65 years since the bird was re-discovered in Fiordland.
