Fire crews had to to break into a car in Wellington to free an unconscious toddler who had been inadvertently locked inside by its mother.

Fire Service acting shift manager Craig Dally said firefighters were called to rescue the three-year-old from a car parked on Main Road in Titahi Bay about 3pm on Friday.

He said the child's mother accidentally activated the self-locking mechanism and left the keys inside the car.

Mr Dally said firefighters found the child in a distressed state and by the time they broke into the car, the toddler was unconscious.

He said an ambulance was on hand to treat the child, who has no injuries.
