Victim vows to fight killer's release

A rape victim of an Auckland murderer says she will fight against his potential release from prison and doesn't think he should ever be freed.

Hayden Taylor, 37, killed pregnant Nicola Rankin, 18, in 1996 and buried her body at Riverhead Forest while on bail for the kidnap and rape of Amanda Watt.

He was sentenced to life for the murder and 17 years' preventive detention for kidnap and rape, which is almost up.

Amanda Watt, who has waived her right to anonymity, says she will argue against Taylor's full release, as she believes he is still capable of serious reoffending.

Ms Watt says she has already heard from people in the Helensville area, where Taylor is from, who are worried about him rejoining their community.

Taylor is to appear before the Parole Board on 9 December. Ms Watt says that she and Nicola Rankin's mother, Carol Rankin, will make submissions at the hearing opposing his release.
