10,000 more children classed as overweight

An Auckland academic says official figures show 10,000 more children have been categorised as overweight or obese this year, compared with 2012.

Boyd Swinburn, a professor of population nutrition at Auckland University, says that indicates that the Government is failing a generation by not doing enough to address the problem of childhood obesity.

Professor Swinburn says a survey produced by the Ministry of Health shows almost one in three children are overweight or obese and the figure is shocking compared with almost one in four children in Australia.

Health Minister Tony Ryall says the Government can pass all the laws it likes, but unless people eat less and exercise more things will not change.
