Two German tourists have been discharged from hospital after being beaten as they slept in a tent near Whakatane town centre.

The 19 year-old man and 18 year-old woman suffered broken teeth and cuts and bruises in the attack early on Boxing Day morning, and were taken to hospital.

They were discharged on Friday afternoon.

Four young people have been charged over the attack, and the police say they have all been remanded in custody after appearing in court on Friday.

A 14 year-old boy, two young men aged 17 and 18, and a 17 year-old woman were charged with aggravated robbery.

A fifth person is still sought.

The woman tourist has arm and facial injuries, while her companion lost some teeth.

Police say most of their property has been recovered, including their travel documents.

Murupara Motor Camp owner Heather Carston hs offered the pair free accommodation. She says their attackers showed a complete lack of mana.
