A charity event has reached its goal of 40,339 Christmas presents for the Salvation Army to give to unfortunate children.

Kmart organised the Wishing Tree Appeal in conjunction with the Salvation Army.

The chain set up wishing trees at all 16 of its stores at the start of November - with presents coming from other businesses, the army and schools as well as the public.

Its New Zealand manager Sue Smith says the tally for the annual appeal was double last year's.
