New immigration advisor standards

A new set of standards for immigration advisers will take effect on Monday, as part of an effort to clamp down on dodgy operators.

The Immigration Advisers Authority says the rules have been drawn up with the input of more than 100 advisers, as well as industry bodies and immigrant groups.

The Immigration Advisers Authority says the new code will give prospective immigrants peace of mind. Under the rules, advisers have to show evidence they are licensed, and must act professionally and honestly.

The authority also warns against using unregistered advisers, saying they can be incompetent and unethical.

Last year, the police issued warrants for the arrest of two unlicensed advisers who are accused of defrauding immigrants out of more than $50,000.
