Trust to raise funds for New Caledonia project

A charitable trust is raising money to pay for a building in the New Caledonian town of Bourail where New Zealand servicemen are buried.

Bourail hosts a war cemetery that includes the graves of 235 New Zealand soldiers who died in the Pacific during World War II.

It is also the memorial site for another 254 for whom there is no known grave.

The Pacific War Veterans Trust plans to raise $65,000 to build a pavilion in Bourail that can be used by the local community.

Trustee Kevin Barron says it is time to give something back to the people of New Caledonia, who continue to maintain the war graves 70 years after the conflict.

Mr Barron says building is expected to start early next month.
