Cancer charity scam warning

9:50 am on 21 January 2014

The Child Cancer Foundation says scammers are phoning people at home claiming to be collecting donations for the charity.

It says it's received three reports from people who have been contacted by someone who sounds like they're in a call centre.

Spokesperson Megan Horsburgh says in each case the caller has an Asian accent and speaks poor English.

Ms Horsburgh says the foundation does not ask for donations via telephone, and she is not aware of anyone who's fallen for the scam.

It's the first time phone scammers have used the foundation - previously it's had problems with door-to-door scammers.

Police have been notified and ask that people leave a message on the Consumer Affairs ScamWatch website if they receive a suspicious call.
