Logging plants shut over safety risk

1:28 pm on 24 January 2014

Fourteen logging operations have been immediately shut down because of the danger of serious injury or death.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment is halfway through a stringent inspection programme of logging operations throughout New Zealand after a spate of deaths in the industry.

So far, 150 operations have been visited and inspectors have issued 182 enforcement actions and closed down 14 logging plants.

Forestry workers are calling for more regular and random inspections to ensure strict safety measures are being followed through.
