Couples travel to NZ for same sex marriage

Almost one-third of the same-sex marriages performed so far have been for couples coming from overseas.

The law allowing same-sex marriage in New Zealand came into effect in August last year and 361 wedding ceremonies were performed in the four months to December.

About three-quarters of the couples coming from overseas travelled from Australia.

Registrar-General of Births, Deaths and Marriages Jeff Montgomery said he expects marriage numbers to increase during the summer months.
