Police plan sevens booze crackdown

Police are warning people in Wellington for the rugby sevens this weekend that alcohol-fuelled disorder will not be tolerated.

The annual two-day tournament kicks off on Friday at Westpac Stadium.

Police operation commander John Spence says an extra 160 police have been rostered for the event and they will closely monitor the crowds at the stadium and in the city.

He says under the new Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act, police have more power to deal with drunken and disorderly revellers. That includes instant fines of $250 for those breaching the central city liquor ban.

Mr Spence says anyone who arrives at the event intoxicated will not be allowed in.

During last year's tournament, 12 people were arrested and nearly 50 evicted from the stadium.
